A Brief History and Interesting Information About the Hard Rock Rocksino
History of the Hard Rock Rocksino
Little did you know, the Hard Rock Rocksino didn’t start out as a casino at all. Originally built in 1934, the destination was first called Sportsman Park and was used as a greyhound racing track, and then subsequently as a car racing facility. The park was eventually demolished in 1956 due to lack of interest, but there were plans to transform the facility into a new harness racing track.
The track was purchased in 1972 by Carl Milstein and was then known as the Northfield Park Racetrack with the nickname “The Home of the Flying Turns”. Some very notable races have occurred here including The Battle of Lake Erie, The Carl Milstein Memorial Pace, and The Cleveland Trotting Classic.
In 2009, Ohio legislation was initiated that would allow each of Ohio’s seven racing tracks to install slot machines, one being the Northfield Park Racetrack. Owner Brock Milstein gave over half a million dollars to the campaign to legalize slot machines, and the racino was able to open in 2013 as we know it now with 2,300 video lottery terminals.
